Janine Neble and Nino Orio's paths first crossed in 1994 at a Stengade music event. At the time, Janine fronted the Danish post-punk band Alive With Worms, while Nino was the guitarist and vocalist for Nightshade. A shared passion for punk, goth, and rock solidified their instant connection, leading them to embark on a collaborative musical journey.
Their initial project, Column (formed in the mid-1990s), explored gothic themes and incorporated church concerts into their performance repertoire. Flemming Davidson joined the band, contributing his talents on programming and keyboards.
Column eventually disbanded, paving the way for the birth of Phantom Pain. Over the past 30 years, Neble and Orio have continuously evolved their sound, refining their music and lyrics. They frequently collaborate with guest musicians to enhance their live performances and recordings.
ORIGINS 1994
Janine Neble's musical journey began in the groundbreaking 1980s NYC music scene. As the captivating vocalist for the girl group Maria Excommunicate, she pushed musical and conceptual boundaries. Her undeniable talent caught the attention of Howard Kushner, a lawyer for Megaforce Records Worldwide, and the legendary American poet Allen Ginsberg. Both figures played a pivotal role in assisting Janine with obtaining U.S. residency and work permits.
After returning to Denmark, Janine resumed her role as the lead singer for Alive With Worms until the band's dissolution in 1997. She then devoted her talents to Column and, subsequently, Phantom Pain.
